Hoy jueves 28, se colocará la piedra fundamental que dará inicio a las obras de la sede departamental de Maldonado del Centro Universitario de la Región Este (CURE). La ceremonia será presidida por el intendente de Maldonado, Oscar de los Santos, y el rector de la Universidad de la República, Rodrigo Arocena.

El terreno, ubicado sobre la calle Tacuarembó entre Avda. Artigas y Avda. Aparicio Saravia, fue cedido por la comuna fernandina en marzo de 2009 y la Univerisdad invertirá $ 70.000.000 para la construcción de un edificio que albergará a 1.250 estudiantes y más de cien docentes en sus 3.500 metros cuadrados.

La sede Maldonado cuenta con la presencia del Instituto Superior de Educación Física, la carrera de Tecnólogo Informático, la Escuela de Administración de la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas, la Tecnicatura en Turismo de la Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación, y la Licenciatura en Diseño de Paisaje, una iniciativa de las facultades de Arquitectura y de Agronomía conjuntamente. Durante el 2009 reunió a ciento cuatro docentes y quinientos ochenta estudiantes, y en el próximo mes de marzo comenzarán a funcionar los Ciclos Iniciales Optativos.

Actualmente el CURE está ampliando sus propuestas educativas y la construcción de la nueva sede Maldonado es un avance sustantivo para consolidar la presencia de la Universidad de la República en el este del país.
